Day 4 Wanaka to Haast ..147km

We left Wanaka at 7:45. Day was cool, overcast with not much wind. We were all a little weary from the Crown Range yesterday. It was an undulating ride for the first 40 km along the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea. After that it was relatively flat thru to Makarora where we stopped for a coffee (hard pressed to call it a Flat White!). The most stocked item in the store at Makarora was insect repellant - must be big sandflies around. From Makarora it was 25 km to the top of Haast Pass. The climb wasn't bad - nothing too steep. Steve was steaming at the top of the climb - the temperature had noticeably dropped. Great downhill from the pass down to the Gates of Haast and then a steady downhill thru to Haast with a gentle head wind. The whole day was great scenery and a fantastic ride. We have been joined in our ride by a mystery rider "Dave". He joined us at Queenstown and has become an integral part of the group. Due to privacy concerns he has not been captured on camera yet. Rumour has it he is closely related to Brian.
There was no "King Richard" award last night as all were on their best behaviour.
Cheers Chilli
p.s Pagey noted that there were 14 fresh road kills on todays ride.
Big day ahead
