Day 12 Wanganui to Taumarunui ..166km

Hi folks, longest day yet on the bike and we got away from Wanganui at 8am sharp. Again the weather gods are smiling on us and had a brillant 30km ride out of Wanganui into the Parra Parras which had a couple of humdinger hills. Was pleased to hear Steve and Tod were finding the ride hard cos I sure was. Had a coffee at Raetihi at the one and only cafe open which was very nice and then continued on false flats barely making 20kph until National Park at 124ks.

Contrary to the hard ride the last time I travelled this bit of road was with a 24 stone insane murderer in the back of a rental Toyota Corolla and today was much more enjoyable. Once we got to National Park which is the second highest township in NZ we finally managed to get rolling at a good clip and rolled into Taumaranui 6 hours later. Hat off to Pagey who is getting over a bad cold and he stuck to it all day. Had a nice meal and couple of beers at the RSA and also have some very friendly and generous hosts at the Alexander Spa Hotel.

Shorter day tomorrow and everyone is looking forward to the long haul in to Auckland.

Pagey's stats for the day are 10 road kill and 3 substantial lengths of road works.

See you soon!!
